X reacts to Facebook, Instagram outage

5 March 2024

(WJW) – While people coast to coast went to the internet Tuesday to find out why Meta’s Facebook and Instagram had gone down, X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, had jokes.

Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Threads — all owned by Meta — went down Tuesday at about 10 a.m., according to DownDetector. Service for users was starting to restore at around 11:30 a.m.

Elon Musk, who owns X of course, took to X to comment on the outage. “If you’re reading this post, it’s because our servers are working,” Musk wrote.

Others joined in:

“Facebook and IG are down – time to bust out your Dictionary,” the Merriam-Webster account wrote.

Others offered suggestions about what to do with your time during the outage.

“When Facebook and Instagram and down, find us here for all of your Fiona content,” the Cincinnati Zoo posted about its star hippopotamus.

Guinness World Records also posted, “Hello everyone who cannot access Instagram or Facebook.”

What caused the Facebook, Instagram outages?

On Facebook and Messenger mobile and desktop, many users received a message to log-in and would then be unable to log-in to their account, with many being told their password is “incorrect.”

Instagram users received notifications on their timeline that the feed could not be refreshed.
