Wichita woman found guilty in fatal Old Town shooting

WICHTA, Kan. (KSNW) — A jury in Wichita has found La’Niha Banks guilty of all counts in connection to the Old Town shooting that killed Lationna Johnson in May 2023.

The jury found Banks guilty of:

Murder in the first degree; In the commission of a felony

Criminal discharge of a firearm; Recklessly at occupied vehicle

Four counts of aggravated assault; Use of a deadly weapon

Attempted murder in the first degree; Intentional and premeditated

Criminal discharge of a firearm; Recklessly at occupied vehicle

Banks was arrested on June 6 after the shooting happened on May 20 in the 1000 block of E. First St. Police arrived around 11:10 p.m. and found Johnson, the mother of an infant, with gunshot wounds to her upper body. She was taken to a local hospital, where she later died.

A police investigation found Johnson was trying to break up a fight between Banks and another group of people.

After she managed to stop the fight, she started to drive away when Banks fired a handgun at her car.

Banks is scheduled for sentencing on April 26.
