Wichita teen sentenced in 2023 fatal shooting

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – A teen from Wichita has been sentenced in the 2023 fatal shooting of 18-year-old JaQualen Dupree.

Tyshon Jacques, who was 18 in October, has been sentenced to 163 months in prison by Sedgwick County Judge Goering. This totals 13 years and 7 months.

In October, Jacques was charged with second-degree intentional murder.

Just after 3 p.m. on Oct. 2, officers responded to the report of a shooting near the intersection of East 3rd Street North and North Broadway Avenue. It was here that police found Dupree in his car unconscious with a gunshot wound to his upper body.

Dupreeā€™s mother, Kenyette Miles, said that he was shot by someone in his car while he was driving to pick up his two younger brothers from school.

According to the Wichita Police Department, after further investigation, Jacques was identified as the shooter and apprehended following a brief foot chase around Kellogg Drive and Topeka Street.
