Wichita ranks 19 on list of Most Overweight and Obese Cities

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Wichita is ranked 19 of 100 “Most Overweight and Obese Cities in the U.S.”

The list created by the website WalletHub shows Wichita is ranked No. 19 on the list with an overall score of 78.39, right behind Canton, Ohio, and ahead of Youngstown, Ohio. Oklahoma City ranks 13th, Tulsa 14th, and Kansas City 48th.

The number of people in the United States who have obesity stands at 41.9%, according to the CDC. The medical cost of obesity is $190.2 billion annually, with $4.3 billion in lost productivity.


Impacts of COVID still felt 4 years later in Kansas

WalletHub gathered data from the U.S. Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and other sources for the rankings. Cities were scored based on health, nutrition, access to health education, exercise, and recreation.

McAllen, Texas, is ranked first on the list of most overweight and obese, with an overall score of 85.54. Coming in at 100 is Seattle, with an overall score of 58.33.
