Wichita Public Schools potentially looking into cutting jobs, ridding buildings

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Wichita Public Schools is looking into potentially cutting over 200 jobs and getting rid of buildings.

Chief Financial Officer Susan Willis gave the board recommendations about how to save money for the current and upcoming budgets at the Board of Education meeting Monday night.

She laid out several potential phases on how to trim money.

Phase one includes administrative solutions, like eliminating non-school positions through attrition.

Phase two would look for ways to cut at least $16 million through eighter building closures or cutting staff. Willis said it would be the equivalent of about 230 teachers.

She ended with recommendations for the Board to give staff permission to look at a “limited building reduction option” to address some of the budget deficit for the 2025 fiscal year.
