Wichita man takes plea agreement in 2022 fatal crash

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – A Wichita man has entered into a plea agreement in connection to a fatal crash that killed 70-year-old Paula McKinney.

Dalton Jones, 27, of Wichita, has agreed to serve 12 months in jail with work release authorized, pay a $2,500 fine, and restitution in the amount of $10,832.97 to Paula’s husband, Gregory McKinney of Park City. He was sentenced Friday morning.

On Jan. 8, 2024, Jones pled guilty to one count of vehicular homicide. He was initially charged with involuntary manslaughter; recklessly.

The crash happened on Oct. 27, 2022, at the intersection of 53rd Street and Air Cap Drive in Park City just before 6 a.m. Jones was driving east on 53rd Street when Paula, who was driving west on 53rd Street, attempted to turn left into a convenience store in front of Jones. The two vehicles collided.

According to court documents, Jones was traveling 82 mph at the point of impact with no applied brakes. The posted speed limit is 40 mph.

Both were taken to the hospital, where McKinney was pronounced dead.

Jones was charged in August 2023.
