WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – A Wichita man has been sentenced for trafficking fentanyl.

Devonte Smith, 28, was sentenced to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to possession with intent to distribute fentanyl.

Court documents state that in April 2023, Smith and a co-defendant traveled to Arizona from Wichita by plane to purchase fentanyl-laced pills and bring them back to Kansas. According to the plea agreement, Smith admitted to flying back to Wichita and directing a co-defendant to return to Kansas with the pills.

Law enforcement seized the pills in a car driven by a second co-defendant in Pratt. During the stop, law enforcement discovered more than 100,000 pills, which tests confirmed were fentanyl-laced.

Criminal charges against the co-defendants are pending within the court system. KSN does not identify suspects unless charges are filed in their case.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Wichita Police Department, Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office, IRS-Criminal Investigation, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Investigations.
