WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A Wichita man was charged in Kansas City, Missouri after police say he picked up a handgun amidst the shooting at Union Station on Wednesday.

Court documents show Jose Castillo was charged in Jackson County, Missouri, with unlawful possession of a firearm.

The probable cause document filed Thursday says a witness who observed a fight pointed out Castillo to officers, saying he had picked up a handgun that was dropped by someone involved in the fight and walked away.

Castillo was told by police to get on the ground, and while he was getting on the ground, he removed a black Glock 22 from his person and threw it on the ground.

Court documents show a police officer noticed Castillo had bloodshot and watery eyes, slurred speech, and a strong odor of alcohol. He told the officer he was in the vicinity of the gunshots, saw the gun on the ground and decided to pick it up before being confronted by police shortly after.

Court documents say detectives ran a criminal records check and found Castillo was a convicted felon in the state of Kansas, convicted of conspiracy to distribute marijuana.

Police said Castillo told them he heard what he thought were fireworks and observed others running from the area. He walked away from the area but walked back toward the restroom when he found the gun. He said he thought it might have belonged to an officer and was going to give it to an officer before he was taken into custody.
