Why are parking costs going up in Manhattan?

22 February 2024

MANHATTAN (KSNT) – If you’ve tried to buy a residential parking permit in the City of Manhattan recently, you may have noticed the cost has tripled.

27 News spoke with City of Manhattan spokesman Andrew Lawson about this recent uptick in costs for parking permits in residential zones. The cost of these jumped from $5 to $15 starting on Jan. 4, 2024 following approval from the City Commission. The reason for this is tied to covering costs related to the permits themselves including costs associated with processing and enforcement of the permits.

“The first residential permit zone was established east of K-State back in 1981,” Lawson said. “The zones have grown in size through the years, and the number of zones has expanded due to growth and infill across the community in various locations. The $5 annual permit fee had been in place since at least 1996 with no increase or adjustment.”

The purchase of a residential parking permit gives people the ability to park in certain areas across the city, depending on the type of permit they buy. A map showing the different zones for these permits, along with rules on what times you can park in them, can be found below. City residents living in these areas must purchase permits for any vehicles they want to park on the streets in these zones.

Permits purchased from the City of Manhattan are good for one calendar year only. For example, if you bought a permit in May, 2024, it would only last until the end of the year before you’d need to renew it.

The permits are only available for purchase by city residents and their guests with a limit of two resident permits and one guest permit per calendar year. While the cost of the residential parking permits has increased this year, other permits have gone down in price. Lawson said the part-time employee permit for parking in the Aggieville Garage was reduced to $10 per month from the previous $20 amount.
