WATCH: Moon shadow rolls over Kansas during eclipse

9 April 2024

TOPEKA (KSNT) – The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) posted a video showing the shadow of the Moon moving over the nation during the total solar eclipse.

The short video, capture via satellite, shows the shadow cast by the Moon passing over much of the U.S. Monday, April 8. For on the ground time-lapse videos of the eclipse from major U.S. cities, click here. The unnatural darkness cast by the eclipse also brought some changes to Kansas’ weather.

The National Weather Service (NWS) station in Topeka reported on social media it recorded a 4 degree temperature drop during the eclipse. This occurrence has been recorded during past eclipse events as the loss of sunlight brings a drop in temperature.

Kansans participated in a nationwide solar eclipse on April 8 with many being able to see anywhere between 75-90% of the event as it happened. Many locals in Topeka came out in force to watch the eclipse with friends at local watch parties.
