Washburn Rural girls’ basketball using postseason experience, perspective for 6A state run

6 March 2024

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Washburn Rural girls’ basketball is two wins away from a return to the 6A state title game for the third-straight season.

The Lady Blues hoisted the trophy in 2022 and finished runners-up in 2023, despite a season ending injury to KU commit Zoe Canfield.

Canfield is back on the court now, with new perspective.

“Sometimes I think you don’t realize what you have until it’s gone,” the senior and Kansas signee said. “What we have right here is an amazing opportunity to go do something really special and make a final run with these girls before I graduate.”

The 2023-24 season, even with Canfield back in action, hasn’t been all smooth sailing. The Lady Blues even suffered a rare three-game losing streak in late January/ early February. Coach Kevin Bordewick says the team found its groove during a mid-season tournament hosted by Seaman.

“Showed us that we can play with some of the best teams in the state and deal with physicality and adjust to how games get called,” Bordewick told 27 News. “I thought we had some good growing up moments in those games… even after that, though, we still kind of had some ebbs and flows and highs and lows. We learned from it.”

The Lady Blues play Wichita Heights, a team which they beat earlier in the year, on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Koch Arena on the campus of Wichita State.
