Washburn basketball sweeps Pitt State at home

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Washburn basketball hosted Pitt State on Saturday in a men’s and women’s double-header.

The Ichabod men stay undefeated at home with an 81-74 victory over the Gorillas, while the Ichabod women won 75-62 with an upset over No. 25 Pitt State.

Men’s Recap:

Washburn men stay undefeated at home this season (9-0) with a win over Pitt State.

The Ichabods took a 2-1 lead early, but the Gorillas took control after, leading by as many as 10 in the first half. A Sam Ungashick jump shot gave Washburn a 37-36 lead at the break as the Ichabods try to complete the comeback.

A Michael Keegan 3-pointer gave Washburn the lead with 16 minutes to play and the Ichabods never looked back. The home team led by as many as 14 en route to an 81-74 victory.

Women’s Recap:

Washburn women get back in the win column with an upset victory over No. 25 Pitt State.

The Ichabods used a big second quarter to carry a 41-32 lead into the locker room after trailing by four to start the period. The Gorillas pulled within three in the third, but Washburn turned that into a nine-point lead to start the final frame.

Washburn held Pitt State at arm’s length for most of the fourth quarter. Free throws towards the end lengthened the Ichabod lead, as the home team held on to the 75-62 upset victory.

The win moves the Washburn men’s record to 12-5, 8-3 in MIAA play. The win moves Washburn women’s record to 11-6, 6-5 in conference play.

Both teams travel to Fort Hays State on Thursday, Jan. 25, for an MIAA double-header.
