Trooper stops car traveling 150 in a 55 mph zone

HARVEY COUNTY, Kan. (KSNW) — The Kansas Highway Patrol said a driver was pulled over in Harvey County for driving nearly 100 miles over the speed limit.

Technical Trooper Chad Crittenden said a driver was stopped Monday on U.S. Highway 50 in Harvey County. According to the citation, the driver was clocked on radar, traveling 150 miles per hour.

The posted speed limit is 55 for that section of Highway 50. The driver was also cited for operating without registration or with an expired registration.

According to the citation, the driver is a resident of California. They will now have to appear in court.

Since December of 2023, the patrol has frequently posted about drivers being stopped driving at excessive speeds on Kansas highways and interstates on social media. Monday’s citation is just one mile under the fastest recorded speed: 151 mph on Feb. 15 on Interstate 70 in Lincoln County.

However, The speed limit of Interstate 70 is 20 miles faster than Highway 50. The Kansas Department of Transportation reports that in 2022, there were 4,890 speed-related crashes.

Of those crashes, 93 were fatal.
