Topeka’s Hamilton earns prestigious honor at KU

7 February 2024

LAWRENCE (KSNT) – Kansas softball pitcher Kasey Hamilton is earning recognition for both her performance on the mound and character away from the game, KU Athletics announced Wednesday.

KU Athletics presents the Marlene Mawson Exemplary Student Athlete award to one senior female athlete every year. That athlete is recognized as someone who plays a large role on their respective team and is a strong competitor as well.

The Topeka native, who graduated from Washburn Rural high school, has led the team in innings pitched in each of her past three seasons. She also started in the Big 12 softball championship last season, helping KU upset No. 8 Oklahoma State for the programs first conference tournament victory since 2007.

She is also a leader on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) this year, where she serves on the communications committee.

Dr. Marlene Mawson was a professor and administrator at KU for over 20 years. During that time, she initiated an intercollegiate women’s sports program at the university. In her time at KU, she coached softball, volleyball, women’s basketball and field hockey.

Hamilton becomes the third KU softball player to win the award. Last years winner for 2022-23 was KU women’s basketball’s Holly Kersgieter.
