Topeka sexual assault survivor to host self-defense classes at Washburn University

12 April 2024

TOPEKA (KSNT) – April is sexual assault awareness and prevention month and local survivor, Gayle Hunter, is shining a light on her assault experience.

Hunter says she was drugged and attacked back in 2020. Since her assault, her passion for hearing and standing with survivors has lead her to create safe spaces for victims all throughout Topeka.

Hunter told 27 News helping survivors is possible through the different events she organizes and the messages she spreads.

“I vowed I was going to do something to help, and last year I decided I’m just going to do it, Hunter said. “Even though you feel alone, you are not.”

Last year, Hunter organized a candlelight vigil that helped bring survivors together by uplifting their voices and sharing their stories. As it was a major success, she’s proud and happy to be hosting the second annual vigil from 6:30-8:30 p.m. next Friday, April 19 at First Presbyterian Church at 817 SW Harrison Street in Topeka.

This Saturday, April 13, Hunter is partnering with Washburn University to host a self defense class for girls and women ages 12 and up. The class will explain ways to prevent a negative situation from occurring, and how to get out of one. It will be held at the student recreation and wellness center from 10-11:30 a.m. You can register for the event by clicking here.
