Topeka man crashes into pond full of sewage while fleeing from police

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Police and sheriff’s deputies worked together in an early morning chase in Topeka that ended with one man in custody.

The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office announced in a press release that a deputy tried to pull over a motorcycle around 1:30 a.m. on Monday, March 11 in the 1600 block of NE Quincy Street. When the motorcyclist allegedly failed to stop, the deputy initiated a vehicle pursuit.

Shawnee County Sheriff’s Dep. Abigail Christian said the motorcyclist crashed into a pond full of sewer water on the Shunga Trail near Garfield Park and then ran into a nearby sewage tunnel.

Deputies were able to take the suspect, a 36-year-old Topeka man, into custody inside the tunnel. He was arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on the following charges:

Failure to yield to an emergency vehicle

Interference with law enforcement

Driving while license suspended

Operating a vehicle without proper registration

License plate not assigned to that vehicle

No vehicle liability insurance

Speeding

Failure to yield when emerging from an alley

Failure to stop at a stop sign

Driving the wrong way on a one-way road

Driving on sidewalk

Failure to report an accident
