Topeka man allegedly causes $550k in damage to Union Pacific Railroad

TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) – A man was arrested after allegedly causing around $550,000 in damage to Union Pacific Railroad rail cars.

At 1:15 a.m. on Wednesday, Topeka police responded to reports of a suspicious person in the 1800 block of Northwest Brickyard Road. Officers found a vehicle near the railroad tracks.

Police found a rail car had its doors open and found a wire on the ground. A 41-year-old Topeka man exited the rail car and tried to run from police. Officers captured and took the man into custody.

The man was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on the following charges:

Burglary; Vehicle to commit felony, theft, DV, or sexually motivated crime

Felony theft $25,000 < $100,000 Motor Vehicle Parts or Accessories

Criminal damage to property; Felony

Interference with LEO; knowingly flee by means other than motor vehicle for felony cases

Criminal trespass
