TOPEKA (KSNT) – Topeka firefighters put out a fire in the downtown area on Sunday that caused more than $100,000 in damage.
Rosie Nichols with the City of Topeka said in a press release that the Topeka Fire Department (TFD) was called just before 5:30 a.m. on March 17 to a two-story home in the 400 block of SW Tyler Street. Crews arriving at the scene found heavy smoke and flames coming from the home.
While no injuries were reported with this fire, it did cause a substantial amount of damage. Nichols said around $120,000 in damage was caused with $110,000 attributed to structural damage and the remainder to content loss. The home was appraised at $154,440 in 2024, according to the Shawnee County Appraiser’s website.
The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time. Smoke detectors were not located in the home at the time of the fire.
