Topeka businesses extend warming center hours

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Warming centers in Topeka will continue to be open to account for incoming cold weather.

Due to a wind chill advisory that will be in effect until tomorrow, and temperatures in the single digits, warming centers across the Capital City will remain open. Some warming shelters are extending their hours of operation through noon on Sunday, Jan. 21. The Topeka Rescue Mission (TRM) shelter at 206 NW Norris St. will be open until noon Sunday, Jan. 21.

Fellowship Hi-Crest/SENT in southeast Topeka is also extending hours for its warming center. A spokeswoman with Fellowship Hi-Crest told 27 News a warming center at 455 SE Golf Park Blvd. will be open 24 hours a day through noon on Sunday, Jan. 21.


Topeka shares tips to prevent frozen pipes

Other facilities that were open during the frigid weather over the past 10 days were at Valeo Behavior Health and Jerusalem/God’s Way Church.

According to a press release form TRM, the warming center has served 190 individuals from when it opened on Jan. 8 through Jan. 17 at 1 p.m. As of now, 139 volunteers have given more than 1,100 hours of their own time to serve at the warming centers.
