WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The Wichita State pitching staff got roughed up a bit by the Gonzaga Zags on Saturday, but the Shockers overcame that by plating 10 total runs to give them the series win, 10-5.
Relief pitcher Tyler Dobbs got the win for the Shockers. He came in in the fifth inning and didn’t allow any hits and struck out one in the win.
It was pitching by committee, though. Wichita State used five pitchers in the contest, with Daniel Zang getting the start for the Shockers. He lasted two innings and gave up one run on one hit and five walks.
Drew Iverson replaced him and lasted 1.2 innings, Ronald Zayas got an inning as well before Dobbs settled in. Brady Hamilton closed the game out in the eighth and ninth innings.
On to the scoring, Wichita State drove in two in the third, three in the fourth and five in the fifth innings. The three RBIs in the fourth inning came off a Seth Stroh home run to right field.
Stroh’s 448-foot moon shot was hit 113 miles per hour off the bat.
The crooked fifth inning is what put the Shockers ahead for good, as it was tied at five heading into the bottom of the frame.
Dayvin Johnson drove in three with a double to the left-center gap, Mauricio Millan hit a single to right and Kam Durnin brought one in on a sacrifice fly to right field.
Wichita State has now won 10 of its last 13 games and will go for the sweep against the Zags on Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. and will stream on ESPN+.
