Temporary emergency declared for Topeka potholes

29 January 2024

TOPEKA (KSNT) – On Monday, the City of Topeka declared a temporary emergency due to potholes.

“We understand that drivers are frustrated and we are going to do our best to get potholes temporarily patched as quickly as possible,” Public Works Director Braxton Copley said.

City crews will be working overtime to patch potholes in the city this week. On Friday, the staff will re-evaluate the situation and continue working overtime if necessary, according to the press release.

Crews will work on emergency, arterial and collector routes first since those roads see the most traffic, according to the press release. The city said the SeeClickFix pothole reporting system will be used to identify problem areas.

The city said throughout winter crews use a cold mix asphalt to patch holes. The material works as a temporary stop-gap to keep the street serviceable. When the weather warms up, crews can use a hot mix for longer-lasting repairs.
