‘Take place every day in every area of the city’: Topeka repairs potholes daily, as reported

25 January 2024

TOPEKA (KSNT) – The City of Topeka says it’s working everyday to repair the potholes in the Capital City.

Last year, city crews repaired more than 36,000 potholes in Topeka, and crews are going into 2024 fixing many a day. According to a spokeswoman with the City of Topeka, crews are repairing potholes as they are being reported.

“Pothole repairs essentially take place every day in every area of the city, as needed,” Amanda Knowland, a City of Topeka Infrastructure Communications Specialist, said. “Each day, we have at least four crews of four employees out patching. With snow cleanup now complete, we will have six crews out daily beginning tomorrow to address potholes.”

During the spring, there are more potholes reported than the crews can take care of. When this happens, the city will prioritize pothole repairs based on the location and its size, according to Knowland. The city prioritizes potholes on main roads that see more traffic.

The city has two methods of repairing potholes, depending on the time of year. According to Knowland, in the winter, crews use a cold asphalt mix to fill the potholes. Crews clean out the debris with shovels and compressed air, then fill the hole with the cold mix combined with aggregate and tamp it down by hand. These repairs made with the cold mix material are expected to be “temporary” fixes to keep the streets serviceable. During the warmer weather months, city crews mix use a hot asphalt mixture to make permanent patches.
