A system is still festering nearby through this evening. Most showers and storms should favor Oklahoma, but a few could pop primarily East of the Turnpike and near the Kansas/Oklahoma state line through evening.
A few sprinkles have been trying to fall farther north Thursday. There is a fast-moving system set to track through Kansas on Friday.
A strong wind shift out of the north will announce its arrival with chillier winds gusting from 30-40 MPH. Moisture is meager and will try to squeeze out a few sprinkles but will fall short.
Most of Saturday looks dry for us. That said, a piece of energy will try to pop a few rain showers with a better chance Saturday night. Depending on timing and temperatures, some snow may mix in near the Kansas/Nebraska state line.
Temperatures will be cooler farther north in the 40s with the warmer air in the 60s positioned near the Colorado and Oklahoma state lines. Rain may be leftover farther east with attendant cloud cover early Sunday.
Late Sunday afternoon and early evening, attention will be focused on western Kansas. A potent low pressure system moves into the state. Strong to severe storms are expected to form ahead of this low and in the warmest part of this system. All forms of severe weather are in the table.
These thunderstorms could then form a line and weaken once they track farther east into the evening and the rest of Kansas. A few things could lesson our chances for severe weather. First is low instability. More cloud cover will drop severe storm chances, but breaking out into sunshine will help thrive it. In addition, the degree as to how much moisture returns to feed this system will also play a part. The dynamics of the spin and strong winds of this system may compensate and enhance severe storm development.
Colder air comes in behind this cold front. Winds will howl and gust from 40-50 MPH all day Sunday through Sunday night across the whole state. Temperatures will be cold enough with lingering moisture to produce snow. Best spots for snowfall accumulations will be near/North of I-70 and in western Kansas. The degree of warm ground should limit higher snowfall totals.
Temperatures early next week will be colder than average Monday and Tuesday. Overnights will be cold enough for frosts/freezes. Wednesday there is a slight chance for a rain shower or two before a bigger warm-up by the end of next week.
