Storm Track 3 Forecast: Warm and windy Easter, storms and snow coming Monday

31 March 2024

Low clouds this morning have kept temperatures warm overnight across much of southern Kansas, with morning lows expected to hover in the 50s. Some parts of western Kansas have developed some patchy fog, with a Dense Fog Advisory for some until 10 am.

This warmer start will serve as a springboard for an unseasonably warm Easter Sunday.

Highs today are expected to rise to the 80s across much of southern Kansas, with upper 70s for areas farther north.

This will also come with gusty south winds throughout the day. In southwest Kansas where the air is more dry, this leads to fire danger with a Fire Weather Warning in effect through the afternoon and evening.

Lows tonight will begin to turn cooler for areas north as a cold front advances, though another mild and humid night is in store for Wichita.

Moisture begins pooling today ahead of the advancing cold front, and a classic severe weather setup takes shape tomorrow as the cold front hovers nearby and a dry line sets up to the west. A few sprinkles are possible early in the day, but we stay mainly dry until the afternoon.

Thunderstorms are expected to develop along the frontal boundaries tomorrow afternoon, and they will be capable of all hazards including damaging winds, large hail, and even some tornadoes. Most of this happens outside of the KSN viewing area, with the zone of highest risk barely clipping our southeast corner. Still, some strong to severe storms are likely to happen in Kansas tomorrow, and we will need to stay weather aware.

With the severe weather threat mainly to the east and south, we will not be totally rain free! More precipitation develops behind the cold front and will persist through the evening Monday and into Tuesday morning. In western Kansas, this may be in the form of some heavy, wet snow.

Accumulations are possible in western Kansas overnight Monday into Tuesday.

Temperatures fall as this system moves out, but recover back near and above normal by late in the week.

Mainly dry through this time frame, with another storm system looking possible by next weekend, which may cause problems for eclipse viewing on the following Monday.
