Storm Track 3 Forecast: Strong winds with severe thunderstorms later Sunday

24 March 2024

Temperatures are rather mild this morning, ranging from the mid 40s to mid 50s thanks to a southeast wind that picked up overnight. We also are seeing scattered showers across central Kansas and some rumbles of thunder in North Central Kansas. Clouds will dominate today with a strong southeast to south wind at 20-40 mph and gusts to 50 mph or higher. High Wind Watches and Warnings are in place for a large portion of Central Kansas through Sunday night, while Eastern Kansas is under a Wind Advisory through Monday morning.

Highs this afternoon will be from the upper 50s in central Kansas to the 60s to near 70 in the west.

Along with the strong winds, Southwest Kansas is under a red flag warning this afternoon where the air is drier.

A dynamic weather system approaching from the west will pull enough moist and unstable air northward across Kansas today leading to strong to severe thunderstorms later today and this evening. Storms can bring damaging winds, large hail and also a couple of tornadoes. Otherwise, Sunday will see strong and gusty south to southeast winds and occasional showers.

Severe storms will form across western Kansas this afternoon then surge into central Kansas this evening. Here’s a look at our severe weather timeline.

As the storm system pushes north and east of us, a strong cold front will push southeast across the area causing rain and storms to transition to snow in western Kansas then continuing on Monday with accumulations likely in western and northern Kansas.

Monday will be a much colder day with highs in the 30s and 40s, but temperatures will fall during the day with a strong and gusty north to northwest wind.

The combination of high winds and heavy snow has prompted Blizzard Warnings for parts of Northwest Kansas and Southwest Nebraska

Temperatures will be slow to recover for the first half of the week, but we will trend back above average by the late week.
