Storm Track 3 Forecast: Strong winds, high fire danger expected this weekend

29 February 2024

Winds have picked up today and the fire threat is high especially across northern and northeastern Kansas.

A weak and fast-moving system tracks nearby into the early overnight, offering a few sprinkles and rain showers mainly East of the Turnpike.

Any amounts will be spotty, light and generally a few hundredths of an inch.  With cooling temps tonight, a few snowflakes and sleet pellets may mix in as the system departs. Lows drop to the 20s and 30s.

Sunshine is back Friday with warming temperatures.  The coldest air is now behind us.  Highs Friday range from the 50s farther east and plenty of 60s out west.  There could also be a few 70s in the southwest corner of Kansas into the Oklahoma Panhandle.  Winds will be lighter, but not for long.

Gusts pick up Saturday and increase substantially by Sunday.

Temperatures also climb through the 60s to the 70s.

The 80s will also make a run later in the weekend near the Oklahoma state line.  Fire danger rises again this weekend with Sunday being the worse day of the two.

A cold front enters Northwest Kansas.  Model trends have continued to dry up our chances for rain and snow.  Looks like activity will have a better chance of thriving around us from Nebraska into Missouri.  There are some indications this cold front may stall across Kansas, just northwest of Wichita.  If this happens, temps ahead of it will spike in the 70s early next week before cooling Monday night.

An active stretch is introduced starting next Wednesday.  There will be waves of rain and possibly some snow mixing in farther northwest.  Moisture will not fall the entire time, but activity could linger into the following weekend on a hit-or-miss basis.  Timing of moisture and attendant cloud cover will impact temperatures with an overall push of afternoon highs above average.
