Storm Track 3 Forecast: Strong storms to start the week followed by snow

1 April 2024

Toasty temperatures for Easter Sunday, with highs in the 60s and 70s across the region. Our southernmost counties were able to jump into the 80s during the afternoon.

Cloud cover will continue to increase through the evening with a few spotty showers possible through the morning.

Lows will be a wide range across the state. Southcentral Kansas will continue to see southerly flow for most of the night, allowing temperatures to stay in the 60s. Lows fall into the 40s across the rest of the region.

Tomorrow will feature another day of drastically different temperatures from one portion of the state to another. Northwest Kansas will see highs in the 40s as northerly winds keep temperatures cool. The rest of the state will be able to climb into the 50s and 60s with southcentral Kansas in the 70s by the afternoon.

As the approaching cold front collides with the warm, moist airmass that will be set up over southeastern Kansas, it will have all of the ingredients for strong to severe storms to form. All forms of severe weather are possible through Monday night.

A few spotty showers will be possible in the morning, but more widespread moisture will arrive during the second half of the day. Strong storms will be possible during the warmest time of the day, along and to the southeast of the turnpike. This will be the area to watch as this is where the warmest temperatures and highest dewpoints will be, fueling any storms that ignite.

Rainfall becomes widespread through the evening, with everyone tapping into the moisture. A few rumbles of thunder will be possible across the region. The strongest storms will still be localized to the area of warmest temperatures in southeastern Kansas.

The temperature will quickly fall as cold air rushes into Kansas behind the passing boundary. Those across western Kansas will start to see snow mixing in with the rain as lows drop below freezing.

Snowfall accumulations will be possible across western Kansas as temperatures fall below freezing. Moisture will clear out by the afternoon and any snow on the ground will quickly melt as highs climb into the 50s.

Temperatures will quickly rebound through the workweek. Highs climb into the 60s and eventually the 70s by Friday. We stay warm through next weekend until our next cold front arrives for the start of the following workweek.
