Storm Track 3 Forecast: Strong/severe storms Thursday, snow out west Friday

7 March 2024

Changes are coming to Kansas with opportunities for much needed moisture.  Rain, thunderstorms and snow will develop as a few decent pieces of energy embark on the Sunflower State before the weekend. Lows tonight will be relatively mild as clouds and moisture gather over Kansas.

Late tonight and nearly by dawn, scattered showers and thunderstorms will develop along a warm front.  A few storms will be capable of producing small hail.  There will also be pockets of heavy rainfall with occasional lightning and thunder.

A storm or two may try to reach severe thresholds. There is a Slight Risk for severe storms including Wichita that stretches down into Oklahoma.

There will be another surge of moisture Thursday afternoon with widespread rain and thunderstorms.  Some storms during this time could also get strong enough for hail and gusty winds.

Temperatures cool Thursday night into Friday as more scattered showers continue.  It will cool enough to change rain over to snow across all of western Kansas into the Oklahoma Panhandle.

Most snowfall accumulation ranges from a trace to an inch but there may be isolated areas up to 3″ or more.  This will weigh greatly on the degree of how quickly and how cold the air becomes with the remaining moisture.  Model guidance looks colder out west with the last bits of moisture before this system exits the region.

Winds will become stronger on Friday, sustained from 15-25 MPH with gusts to 40 MPH across the whole state.  The wind direction will also be from the north, making it feel like a raw day. Temperatures will stay cool Saturday with a jump on Sunday.

Sunshine will return through the first half of next week.  Another system next Wednesday into Thursday will trigger a round of showers and thunderstorms before another small temperature dip.
