1 April 2024
We started our Monday with a few storms across southeast Kansas, but we are not done with our current storm system crossing Kansas. A warm and humid air mass has pushed northward through the eastern half of Kansas giving a warm and humid feel to the air. Northerly winds behind a cold front lying through central Kansas is bringing a much cooler day in the western half of the state.
Showers and storms will become more widespread across southern and eastern Kansas this afternoon and evening. There is the threat for severe weather of all forms with some of the storms late this afternoon and evening, mainly east of the Kansas Turnpike with some of the rain switching to wet snow during tonight in portions north central and southwest Kansas. Today will feature another day of drastically different temperatures from one portion of the state to another. Northwest Kansas will see highs in the 40s as northerly winds keep temperatures cool. The rest of the state will be able to climb into the 50s and 60s with southcentral Kansas in the 70s this afternoon.
A few spotty showers will be possible in the morning, but more widespread moisture will arrive during the second half of the day. Strong storms will be possible during the warmest time of the day, along and to the southeast of the turnpike. This will be the area to watch as this is where the warmest temperatures and highest dewpoints will be, fueling any storms that ignite. As the approaching cold front collides with the warm, moist airmass that will be set up over southeastern Kansas, it will have all of the ingredients for strong to severe storms to form. All forms of severe weather are possible through Monday night.
Rainfall becomes widespread through the evening, with everyone tapping into the moisture. A few rumbles of thunder will be possible across the region. The strongest storms will still be localized to the area of warmest temperatures in southeastern Kansas, mainly southeast of the Kansas Turnpike.
The temperature will quickly fall as cold air rushes into Kansas behind the passing boundary. Those across southwestern and North Central Kansas will start to see snow mixing in with the rain as lows drop below freezing. Snowfall accumulations will be possible across a portion of southwestern and north central Kansas as temperatures fall toward freezing.
Moisture will clear out by the afternoon Tuesday and any snow on the ground will quickly melt as highs climb into the 50s.
Temperatures will quickly rebound through the workweek. Highs climb into the 60s and eventually the 70s by Friday. We stay warm through next weekend until our next cold front arrives for the start of the following workweek.
