24 January 2024
Cloud cover remains locked in place, creating a gloomy atmosphere for our Tuesday evening. Temperatures were mild today, with highs in the 30s and 40s.
Our next wave of wintry weather arrives this evening. Winter Weather Advisories are in place for northcentral Kansas through 8 AM Wednesday.
This is as slick sports will be possible due to freezing rain tonight. Temperatures will need to be monitored closely tonight as we will see a transition from rain to freezing rain.
Southcentral Kansas can expect to see primarily rain as temperatures will sit just above freezing. Northcentral Kansas will be colder, creating freezing rain in this section of the state. Western Kansas could also run into slick spots due to freezing drizzle and freezing fog as opposed to rain.
Fog will intensify overnight into Wednesday morning as our atmosphere has ample moisture. Dense Fog Advisories are in place for almost all the state through noon Wednesday.
With temperatures falling into the 20s and 30s overnight, freezing fog will again be a concern. Slick spots on roadways will impact the morning commute tomorrow.
Freezing rain and freezing fog will create a glaze of ice on surfaces in areas where our temperatures dip below 32 degrees. Untreated roads will be slick, as well as bridges and overpasses. Also, be careful on sidewalks and parking lots, as all exposed surfaces will be at risk of accumulating a thin layer of ice.
Temperatures will continue an upward swing through the week. We reach the 40s by Thursday with dry skies and even some peaks of blue between the clouds.
But our unsettled pattern is not over yet. Rain returns on Friday, bringing a good drenching to the region. Temperatures will be well above freezing, so there is less of a concern for winter weather as we approach the weekend.
Highs continue to spike as we reach the 50s by the end of the weekend and the beginning of next week with sunny skies and above-average temperatures.
