Storm Track 3 Forecast: Foggy and gloomy today, another round of rain Friday

24 January 2024

A damp, gloomy night in Kansas as dense fog has overtaken just about the entire state. A Dense Fog Advisory is in effect across nearly the entire state until noon.

Visibility may be under half a mile at times, so please be sure to drive carefully! In addition to the fog, temperatures in the north-central Kansas have chilled down to near or slightly below freezing, and with the abundance of moisture and cold ground, freezing fog and drizzle will be a problem through the morning hours.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 8am for the possibility of light icing, which may lead to travel troubles especially on any untreated roads. Sidewalks and parking lots will also be slick, so watch your step!

A few light showers are possible especially in the morning but these should gradually dissipate through the day. Patches of drizzle will be possible all day.

Fog should lift for the afternoon but the clouds hang tough all day, which keeps us gloomy and cool for the day. Temperatures in the upper 30s and 40s for afternoon highs.

The moisture stays in place tonight and another round of fog is looking likely tonight.

Temperatures change little on account of the dense blanket of clouds and fog trapping heat at the surface. Lows in the 30s mainly with an exception for northwest Kansas where there may be a bit more clearing.

Tomorrow we keep the clouds around but it should be overall a dryer day. Temperatures increase a bit for the afternoon.

Another round of rain spins up by Friday as another storm system finds this pool of moisture we have in place. The track of this system favors the southern half of the state with the highest rain chances. Temperatures will be well above freezing, keeping this as all rain.

A widespread 1/4″ to 1/2″ rainfall is possible Friday, with some localized totals up to an inch!

A quieter pattern takes root as upper level high pressure takes over by the weekend. More sunshine and unseasonably mild temperatures build in next week, when some parts of the state may be flirting with the 60s!
