Storm Track 3 Forecast: Fire weather concerns, warm and windy weekend

2 March 2024

Clouds are slow to erode the rest of today which impacts our high temperatures around the Wichita Metro.  Those enjoying more sunshine outside the influence of our most recent storm system will be warmer than those in the clouds.

We should see most of this transition to clear skies later this evening.

That said, patchy fog may form in select spots tonight.

There will be an uptick in strong and dry winds this weekend.  Winds will gust from 30 to 45 MPH at times.

Elevated to critical fire weather concerns stretch across the region.  Fire weather alerts are posted throughout the weekend for this danger.  Saturday the main threat will be in Western Kansas into the Oklahoma Panhandle with Fire Weather Warnings from 11 AM to 8 PM.

Fire Weather Watches for Sunday cover most of the southern half of the region.

High temperatures Saturday will warm into the 70s quickly with some 80s sprinkled in across Kansas.

Record highs could be in jeopardy Sunday as a cold front enters the northwest corner of Kansas.

The cold front does not have any moisture to work with for us, but a few rain showers cannot be ruled out near the Nebraska state line and in eastern Kansas through Monday, just outside the KSN viewing area.

The cold front looks to slow down near the Turnpike, giving folks farther southeast more warmth for a brief time on Monday.  There could also be an area of enhanced fire danger near the front Monday as well.

Temperatures will then cool but stay just above average ahead of the next system the middle of next week.

Still a lot to be ironed out with an unsettled stretch mid to late next week.  Rain and thunderstorms are possible late Wednesday into Thursday.  Colder temperatures in Northwest Kansas could turn any moisture over to snow by Thursday.

How quickly this system departs is key because a slower track would be more beneficial to our region in terms of light rain and/or snow lingering through next Friday and Saturday.
