Storm Track 3 Forecast: Cooler into the weekend, increasing storm chances

20 March 2024

A low pressure system in the upper levels of the atmosphere finally ejects out of the Southwest through Thursday.

This will bring an opportunity for a few showers and thunderstorms near the Kansas/Oklahoma state line but Oklahoma stands the better area for seeing most of the development.

A weak front or wind shift has tracked south across Kansas which is steering where this upper level low goes around our region. Overnight lows will range from the 30s to the 40s.

Any showers Thursday morning and afternoon will be along and East of the Turnpike at best before exiting.

Temperatures cool to the 60s across the state Thursday. Winds will be light.

There is another cold front this Friday.  Rain and snow align to the northeast of us.  A few sprinkles may try to build back closer to Wichita but moisture is difficult to come by with this system.  Temperatures keep cooling with each cold front.

Saturday will be a chilly day with highs in the 40s and 50s.  Trends are pointing to much of this day staying dry until the overnight.  A few rain showers with snow showers farther north are possible during the day.  Overnight, there is a more pronounced wave of scattered rain showers which will track from west to east across Kansas.

Sunday is the day to be weather aware especially across southern Kansas with a higher focus in Southwest Kansas and the Oklahoma Panhandle.  A low develops out of Colorado and tracks into Kansas.  Moisture returning into the region is slow and not incredibly deep.  Leftover cloud cover from rain earlier might also play into lessening severe storm chances.

Still, there is a window to the southwest where a few storms will be capable of becoming severe into Sunday evening.  A lot of factors still need to be ironed out as we get closer to Sunday.

Colder air spills in behind a potent cold front Sunday night which will allow moisture to transition to snow farther north and west through Monday.  Some snowfall accumulations are possible into early next week.  Temperatures also trend below average for the first half of next week with a slight uptick toward the end.  More rain showers are possible next Wednesday into Thursday.
