Storm Track 3 Forecast: Cold front tracking closer, rain chances return midweek

4 March 2024

Toasty temperatures today across the Sunflower State. Highs were in the 60s and 70s, with a few 80s across southcentral Kansas. Wichita tied our record daily high temperatures of 80 degrees, initially set in 1994.

As warm and windy conditions continue through the evening, so do fire weather concerns. Fire Weather Warnings remain in place through 9 PM tonight.

We will see a wide range of temperatures overnight. A cold front will sweep through the state, causing northerly winds to move into most of the state. Lows will be in the 20s and 30s for most, while those ahead of the cold front will see lows in the 40s and 50s.

Winds will be gusty tomorrow morning as the cold front slowly advances east. Northerly winds will be gusting up to 40 MPH across Western Kansas, while Eastern Kansas will see southerly flow.

This will lead to highs across the board tomorrow. We see the mid-50s in Northwest Kanas while Southcentral Kansas flirts with the low 70s. The rest of the state will teeter somewhere in between with highs in the 60s.

Temperatures slowly retreat this week. We cool into the 60s through the midweek before a passing cold front pushes us back into the 50s on Friday.

Our next significant piece of energy arrives late Wednesday night, bringing the chance for rain back to the Plains. Showers will begin before midnight and last through the morning.

Temperatures will fall in western Kansas as cold air filters in behind the passing boundary, which could lead to snowflakes mixing in with the rain for areas in Northwest Kansas. Showers will be more widespread across Central and Eastern Kansas ahead of the passing front.

Depending on how quickly the system clears out, moisture will linger into Friday. Northerly winds will pull in cooler temperatures, putting highs back towards the seasonal average.

Skies dry out for the weekend, and temperatures will begin to tug upward by Sunday. We continue into an above-average trend for the following week.
