Storm Track 3 Forecast: Beautiful Saturday, warm windy Easter, storms Monday

30 March 2024

Waking up a bit chilly this morning after a weak cold front pushed through yesterday, that front is going to give us a day of nearly perfect weather outside!

Winds will be lighter and temperatures just slightly cooler than yesterday, with highs mainly in the 60s and low 70s expected. This is the kind of weather you will not want to miss, make sure to get a little time outside this afternoon!

Tonight, temperatures drop to the 40s and 50s as south winds take over.

With south winds becoming gusty on Easter Sunday, temperatures will spike with a jump of 10 degrees.

Southern parts of Kansas may reach into the lower 80s! Fire danger will be high on Sunday due to the strong winds, especially in southwest Kansas and the panhandles where the air will be driest.

Humidity increases later in the day on Sunday, and we will have an unusually warm night Sunday into Monday. This is a sign of the ingredients for storms coming together, which will align on Monday as a potent storm system arrives from the west. A few morning showers may hang around early Monday.

As our storm system finds the moisture we expect to have in place Monday, thunderstorms are expected to develop. Storms will likely initiate somewhere around the Kansas Turnpike and move off to the east quickly.

Wichita is included in the Marginal Risk area in the latest update from the Storm Prediction Center, and that threat level rises sharply to an Enhanced Risk in southeast Kansas. All forms of severe weather will be on the table, with damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes all possible.

Colder air settles in as this system moves past, and a few snowflakes may fly with some residual moisture behind the cold front. Some minor snow accumulation may happen in western Kansas overnight to early Tuesday morning, but temperatures will not be cold enough for it to last long. This storm system wraps up and we stay dry for the rest of the week, with temperatures rising steadily toward next weekend.

After that, the next storm system in line may come up around Sunday into Monday, which may have negative implications for eclipse viewing on April 8th.
