Storm Track 3 Forecast: Another brief Arctic surge on the approach Thursday

17 January 2024

A beautiful day (compared to the last 6 in the deep freeze) is wrapping up!  Many locations getting above freezing this afternoon except for areas farther north where the snowpack is stuck in place.

With the added moisture in the air due to melting snowpack up north, we will need to watch for areas of freezing fog into Thursday morning.

A series of cold fronts will arrive over the next 24.  The strongest will be announced by rather stout winds Thursday.  Winds will increase from northwest to southeast during the day. Wind chills will become quite bitter behind this boundary into Friday morning.

Temperatures will start to come down tomorrow and drop into the freezer for a couple days before warming next week.

A few flurries cannot be ruled out tonight to the north and east.

There is another shot for flurries and light snow into Thursday night but I see most of this missing the KSN viewing area as it skirts around us to the north and east.

Temps will crash with this wave of Arctic air.  Wind Chill Advisories and Wind Chill Watches are posted to account for this stretch of dangerously cold wind chills from -20 to -30 degrees.

Friday and Saturday will be our coldest days over the next week. Wind Chill Watches will more than likely be expanded farther south.

Stronger and milder winds begin to kick in Saturday night and continue to end the weekend. Active weather takes over next week with a series of systems.  First of which Monday will be to our southeast but locations near and East of the Turnpike will see some rain showers into Monday night.

There is a more pronounced system Tuesday into Wednesday that will bring more widespread rain showers to the region.  Colder air could briefly change this to a splash of snow out west. Temperatures near average will dominate next week.
