Storm Track 3 Forecast: A warming trend through the weekend. Storms by Monday.

27 March 2024

We’re coming off another cold night across the region with overnight lows again at Winter levels dropping into the teens and 20s for low temperatures.

Skies were partly cloudy overnight with some snow showers from the I-70 corridor north into southern Nebraska. A few rain and snow showers will linger across northeast Kansas into early this afternoon, otherwise look for partly cloudy skies with continued below average temperatures, but not as windy nor as chilly as yesterday. Highs this afternoon will reach into the lower to middle 50s across the state.

Clear to partly cloudy skies and light winds tonight will lead to cold temperatures overnight dropping to near or a few degrees below freezing in most of the region.

The warming trend will be in full force by Thursday as temperatures climb to the 60s, then the 70s on Friday. Winds get gusty by this time and may lead to elevated fire danger, particularly in western Kansas.

A cold front will slide across the state on Friday night, but it has no moisture to work with. So, at most we should just see some patchy clouds on Friday night. After temperatures warm back to the 70s in most of the state on Friday afternoon, Saturday will follow with slightly cooler temperatures. But temperatures will still get above average the first half of the weekend, reaching the 60s Saturday afternoon with a few spots near 70 closer to the Oklahoma state line.

Our next opportunity for moisture comes early next week, as a stronger low pressure system and a stout cold front surge through Monday into Tuesday. A few scattered showers and thunderstorms can develop Sunday night into Monday. A decent surge of low-level moisture from the south along with that approaching storm system will lead to some chance for a severe thunderstorm or two by Monday afternoon and evening, especially over the eastern half of the state. Showers can mix with or change to snow in parts of northern and western Kansas later Monday night into Tuesday as colder air arrives behind the early week system.
