Storm Track 3 Forecast: A little chillier today, afternoon snow out west

10 February 2024

Taking a chillier turn for today as another storm system gets ready to spin up across the southern plains. Temperatures have taken a dip, starting off in the 20s and 30s.

We rise to the 40s and 50s this afternoon, coldest in western Kansas. Clouds will be on the increase throughout the day, with sunshine in short supply.

A strong trough of low pressure in the upper atmosphere is swinging across the mountain states today, and that brings moisture to western Kansas by the early afternoon.

Rain and snow showers spread into southwest Kansas beginning around midday, but they will not make much eastward progress through the day.

A Winter Weather Advisory takes effect at 3 PM for extreme southwest Kansas and the Oklahoma Panhandle, with a Winter Storm Warning just across the state line in Colorado.

Snow may try to spread a little farther north and east overnight. Amounts will be fairly light and temperatures hovering near or slightly above freezing will keep most of this from sticking. Travel issues will be limited outside of the Winter Weather Advisory areas.

Lows tonight drop to the 20s and 30s.

The area of precipitation drops to the south overnight and takes up residency in the Texas Panhandle and Oklahoma by tomorrow morning. This storm has continued to trend south over the last several days, and it looks even more likely that this will stay south of the state line.

Impactful snow accumulations up to 3 inches will be possible in far southwest Kansas and the Oklahoma Panhandle, elsewhere we see less than an inch with much of central Kansas missing out entirely.

Sunday looks mostly dry across Kansas, with lingering moisture in southwest Kansas wrapping up around midday. Starting out cloudy, some clearing will build in later in the day. Northeast winds keep it chilly all day with highs in the 30s and 40s.

With our weekend system out of the way, we will settle in for a fairly quiet pattern for most of the week ahead. Temperatures start on a slow warming trend that carries temperatures back above average by midweek.

Another cold front increases clouds around the end of the week, but moisture looks limited for Kansas. It will only drop us to near or slightly below normal.
