Spring practice underway for KU football, Leipold happy with day one

LAWRENCE (KSNT) – The Jayhawks are in the process of building, literally and figuratively.

KU is building a reimagined David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium. But while the construction continues, the players and coaches continue to put work into building up the program itself.

Kansas football began spring practice on Tuesday.

“Happy with our first day,” head coach Lance Leipold said. “Great attitude, ran around well.”

Leipold pointed out that KU was inside for much of its 2023 spring practices. He said it felt nice to be outside on Tuesday.

“Our guys have done a great job adapting to working around construction and all the other little things we’ve asked them to do,” he said.

Besides construction and stadium renovations, there are adjustments that come with staff changes. Most notably, KU has a new offensive coordinator in Jeff Grimes. Grimes is getting used to how KU runs things, while also bringing new ideas.

“He’s learning too, in some ways,” Leipold said, “But at the same time [we want to] let him put his stamp on this offense in ways.”

As senior quarterback Jalon Daniels works back from a season-ending injury in 2023, Leipold said he took, “some,” reps on Tuesday.

“Really happy with the way he threw the ball,” Leipold said. “He definitely was out here taking reps.”

KU continues spring practice on Wednesday and will hold a spring showcase, at Rock Chalk Park, on April 12 at 7 p.m.
