Shawnee County sees low voter turnout for Presidential Preference Primary

19 March 2024

TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Shawnee County elections office is seeing low voter turnout for Tuesday’s special election.

27 News spoke with Shawnee County election commissioner Andrew Howell regarding voter turnout. He says as of 2:00 p.m., only about 3% of eligible voters had cast their votes. That figure includes mail-in and early ballots according to Howell.

“It’s pretty low turnout so far,” Howell said. “It is picking up though, throughout the day we’re seeing I think more and more people were aware of it as they see the signs and social media conversations, so we’re hoping it picks up a little bit!”

He says the office is hoping for 10-15% turnout by the end of the day.

As long as you are physically inside your polling location before 7:00 p.m., Howell says you will be allowed to get your vote in. He hopes to be able to report results by 9:00 p.m. To find a polling place near you, click here.
