Shawnee County District Attorney talks murder, crime issues in Topeka

29 February 2024

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Shawnee County District Attorney Mike Kagay sat down with 27 News Anchor David George to discuss some hot topics in local crime news.

Kagay touched on the ongoing case related to the death of Topeka five-year-old Zoey Felix from last year, the recent Kansas Supreme Court decision to affirm the murder convictions of Richard D. Showalter, human trafficking, teen dating violence awareness month and 2023’s record-high homicide rate.

“It was horrible and it was difficult to go through that I think as a community and certainly law enforcement and my office, it was very challenging,” Kagay said. “That’s not typical of this community, those numbers are not typical of this community and if you look at the two years before that, those numbers I think were 14 and 18 in terms of overall homicides.”
