WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A car that reminds people of the famous SeaWorld orca Shamu will soon be driving around Wichita.
The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office says three patrol vehicles will sport the unique design. For people who were driving in the 1990s, it is deja vu.
The black-and-white curved design was first introduced in 1993 under Sheriff Mike Hill. The deputies affectionately called the design “Shamu,” and it won a national award.
Every marked patrol vehicle had the Shamu paint scheme until Sheriff Robert Hinshaw implemented the current design in late 2009.
The sheriff’s office says the Shamu design has always been a source of pride for the deputies who drove those vehicles.
So, late last year, someone proposed putting the throw-back design on three of the sheriff’s office’s new Dodge Durangos.
Sheriff Jeff Easter gave the OK. The first vehicle is entering the fleet this week. One of the community liaison deputies will drive it.
The sheriff’s office says Sedgwick County Fleet Management helped find the old decal package, and EgraF-X used the old decals to make new ones and apply them to the SUVs.
