Sedgwick, Harvey County senator to retire

31 January 2024

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A state senator representing much of northern Sedgwick County and all of Harvey County will retire at the end of her term.

Senator Carolyn McGinn made the announcement on the Senate floor. The Republican was elected as senator of District 31 in 2004 and has kept the job for 20 years.

Before becoming senator, she was a Sedgwick County Commissioner for six years.

“I have been extremely blessed to have had the opportunity to serve the people of my district and Kansas. But the time has come where I am needed more on the farm, at home and with my family,” McGinn said in a news release. “I have had wonderful people help me serve my community over the years, and I will never forget their support.”

She has served on numerous committees, including the budget committee for 16 years. On the committee, McGinn says she worked to repair social services to meet the needs of the most vulnerable populations.

“Serving on Ways and Means for the social services sector expanded my world and understanding of those who have challenges. After my retirement, I will continue to be an advocate back home in my community for these services,” she said.

The Kansas Secretary of State’s website shows one person, so far, has filed to take over McGinn’s job. Stephen Owens is a Republican from Hesston. He currently serves in the Kansas Legislature as a representative for House District 74.

The deadline for candidates to file is noon on Monday, June 3.
