Sedgwick County inmate dies after being hospitalized over 25 times

12 February 2024

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — An inmate at the Sedgwick County Detention Center died on Sunday due to chronic medical conditions, the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said.

A news release from the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said the male inmate, 36, was transported to a local hospital on Jan. 29 due to chronic medical problems.

He was being evaluated by the Detention Facility Medical Clinic for the past three years after reporting difficulties with his chronic medical issues to jail medical staff.

The SCSO said he was hospitalized a total of 25 times since his arrest, and eight times in 2023. Hospital staff had been attempting to treat him, but his condition had a “very small chance” of survival.

The SCSO said, based on medical advice, it contacted the inmate’s family and made accommodations for them to visit him on Feb. 8. He died three days later. The inmates identity is being withheld at the request of his family.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Investigation Division were notified.

He was booked into the Sedgwick County Detention Facility on Oct. 30, 2020 on felony charges of criminal sodomy, aggravated indecent liberties and sexual exploitation of a child.
