WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Scammers are using the Kansas Offender Registration Act to target victims.
According to the Geary County Sheriff’s Office, an offender reported being called by a scammer impersonating an officer. The “officer” said the offender missed an appointment for a DNA swab and that a warrant had been issued. If the offender did not pay $3,000, he would be arrested.
The offender told the “officer” he could only pay $2,000, and the “officer” agreed. This is when the offender became suspicious and called his local law enforcement agency.
The GCSO says on the same day, a second attempt to scam an offender was made from the same phone number.
“Again, please take notice a Law Enforcement Officer will never attempt to collect money from you for a warrant,” said the GCSO.
