Scam targets registered offenders in Geary Co.

16 February 2024

JUNCTION CITY (KSNT) – The Geary County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) shared an alert on Friday after reports of individuals on the registered offenders list being targeted by scammers.

According to the sheriff’s office, the GCSO was contacted by another Kansas law enforcement agency regarding a scam call. It was reported that an individual was told he missed an appointment for a DNA swab and a warrant had been issued for his arrest. The scammer then told the offender to pay $3,000 or he’d be arrested.

The offender told the scammer he could only pay them $2,000; the scammer agreed. According to the sheriff’s office, the offender became suspicious and said he would contact his local law enforcement agency.

Another scam attempt was made the same day using the same phone number. The GCSO reminds residents that law enforcement officers will never try to collect money from locals for a warrant.
