Scam alert: Broke travelers selling jewelry

BARTON COUNTY, Kan. (KSNW) — The Barton County Sheriff’s Office is warning people about some alleged scammers who may be traveling through Kansas.

On Wednesday, just after 4 p.m., deputies got the call of a theft that happened on U.S. Highway 281, south of Great Bend.

The victim told deputies about being flagged down by a motorist. The motorist claimed to need assistance getting to New York and said he was broke and needed money for the trip.

According to the sheriff’s office, the motorist conned the victim into purchasing fake jewelry to fund the trip. The victim later found out the jewelry was fake.

The sheriff’s office says several similar incidents have happened in nearby counties, and there are two men involved.

Investigators say the men were driving a late model white Chevrolet Traverse with Texas license TVF 8226. Another possible license plate is Texas SPN 9592.

Barton County provided a vehicle photo that was taken by another sheriff’s office which is also investigating similar thefts.

Law enforcement is advising people to not interact with the people. Instead, call 911 immediately to report them.
