Salina police use Taser on man at house fire

28 February 2024

SALINA, Kan. (KSNW) — The Salina Police Department arrested a man who allegedly tried to get back into a burning home Tuesday night and fought with officers.

Around 8:30 p.m., firefighters were trying to put out a house fire in the 200 block of N. Penn. According to police, a 33-year-old man tried to go into the home even though he was told to stay out.

Police say the man took off his shirt and threatened to hurt first responders.

Officers arrived and found the man in a camper near the fire. They say he refused to come out and allegedly told police to shoot him. The Salina Police Department said officers entered the camper, and an officer used a Taser on the man, but he kept struggling with them.

The man got a small cut to his forehead. After police arrested him, they took him to the hospital, where they say he kept threatening them.

Man charged with murder in 2020 fentanyl overdose

The man was booked into jail around 11 p.m. on suspicion of unlawful interference with firefighters and interfering with law enforcement officers. He got out of jail 12 hours later.

KSN News is waiting to hear back from the Salina Fire Department about how much damage the fire did to the home and if investigators have determined what started the fire.
