Road construction on 2 Kansas interstates to begin

13 March 2024

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – The Kansas Department of Transportation says construction will start on two pavement replacement projects on Monday, March 18. The work will happen on Interstate 135 and Interstate 70.

I-135 project near Moundridge

The work on I-135 will be just north of exit 48 in McPherson County and continue south for about three miles to near Moundridge.

During construction, southbound lanes and the exit and entrance ramp at exit 48 will be closed, and traffic will be reduced to one lane as median crossovers carry southbound traffic to the northbound lanes.

As work progresses, the southbound I-135 ramp and lanes will be reopened, and the northbound lanes of I-135 will be closed for reconstruction. The northbound exit and entrance ramp at exit 48 will be closed at that time.

The $19 million project is scheduled to be completed by Koss Construction Co. of Topeka in late July, weather permitting.

I-70 project at Junction City

Deteriorated pavement will be replaced on the westbound lanes of I-70 from mile marker 296 to mile marker 300 in Junction City. Westbound I-70 ramps will be closed at times to allow for pavement replacement.

I-70 traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction as median crossovers will carry one lane of westbound traffic through construction on an eastbound lane.

KDOT says the pavement will be replaced on the Washington Street roundabout when the project reaches the exit 296 ramp in late June or July.

Phase Two is scheduled to be completed in November 2024.

Phase Three will replace the deteriorated pavement in the eastbound lanes and is scheduled to begin in March 2025.

All three phases of the project are to be completed by December 2025, weather permitting.

Wildcat Construction Co. Inc. and Subsidiaries of Wichita is the prime contractor of the $30 million project.
