REPORT: KU and Leipold agree to new contract

28 February 2024

LAWRENCE, Kan. (KSNT) – The University of Kansas is taking the necessary steps to keep Lance Leipold in Lawrence, according to multiple reports.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel is reporting that Leipold and KU have agreed on a new contract that will give the Jayhawks’ head football coach a significant raise. The new deal is set to boost Leipold’s average salary to north of $7 million per year, making him one of the three highest-paid coaches in the Big 12.

The new contract is a raise but not an extension, Thamel reports, Leipold’s deal remains through 2029.

The salary boost comes after he led KU to a 9-4 season and its first bowl win since 2008 in his third year at the helm. Leipold affirmed his commitment to KU this offseason, even when reports said he was the leading candidate for the Washington job.
